According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics at the Department of Justice, someone is sexually assaulted somewhere in America every two minutes. This statistic accounts for assaults of both men and women 12 years of age and over.
The counter that appears on The Voices and Faces Project website was set on November 30, 2004 based on the following statistical analysis from the NCVS:

TOTAL 1,232,189 rapes/sexual assaults between 1-1-00 and 11-30-04.
Based on the NCVS data, between 1-1-00 to 12-31-03 there were 781,980 rapes/sexual assaults. Since data for 2004 wasn't officially available yet, the estimate for 2004 was taken by averaging the years 2002 and 2003, which came to 247,865. That number divided by 12 resulted in a monthly average of 20,655. That number multiplied by 11 resulted in an estimated 227,209 rapes/sexual assaults for the first 11 months of 2004.
