Victoria Sherden

Victoria is a survivor participant and handles administrative functions for The Voices and Faces Project. She has been a Chicago Police Officer for 20 years, serving as a Patrol Officer, Investigator, Tactical Officer and a Certified Dare Officer. For four years she worked in the Neighborhood Relations Office where she served on the Court Advocacy, Community Outreach and Domestic Violence committees.

Victoria's mission in life has always been to do whatever she could do to help others, especially women who are victims of domestic violence and rape. She has first-hand experience: Her ex-husband brutally raped and beat her, leaving her stranded in an unknown place. When she called the police, the officer told her there was nothing they could do. In 1980, domestic violence was not a crime that society acknowledged. Six years later she became a police officer to enforce laws that were not around when she needed protecting.

"I decided to volunteer for The Voices and Faces Project because I felt it was a safe place to tell my story and help other survivors see that they are not alone," says Victoria. "My favorite saying is 'knowledge isn't knowledge until you have given it away'."
