Pilar Patzkowski

Born in Lima, Peru, Pilar - a longtime Voices and Faces Project supporter - joined our team as the Voices and Faces Project's "Project Latina" Outreach Coordinator and Spanish-language translator in 2010. Pilar, who is Bilingual, works closely with the project's research director, Katie Feifer, to translate Spanish-language survivor surveys, communicate directly with the Spanish-speaking Latina community, and represent The Voices and Faces Project at critical events related to sexual violence against Latinas, most recently rallying on behalf of the women of Atenco, Mexico, victims of political rape and torture. The Voices and Faces Project has worked closely with Amnesty International on the Atenco case - traveling to Mexico to interview and photograph survivors of rape and torture as a part of our documentary efforts. Pilar translated all materials related to our interviews on the ground in Mexico, transcribing hours of taped conversations so that we could bring the stories of these courageous women to the attention of the public in the United States, and beyond. Read more about the women of Atenco here.

In 2011 - 2012, Pilar will work directly with Voices and Faces Project founder Anne K. Ream, designer Yianna Bouyioukou, and our "Project Latina" advisory council to help us build the country's first Spanish-language, survivor story-focused website. Modeled on voicesandfaces.org, voicesandfaces.org/mujeres - our forthcoming site - will feature Latina survivor stories, access to critical Spanish-language support services, and tools for advocating with and on behalf of Latina and Spanish-speaking survivors of rape and sexual violence.

Pilar notes, “When I first heard about The Voices and Faces Project, I immediately wanted to be a part of the organization. I believe that through our work together, we can change people's hearts and minds. It has been a wonderful journey to work with such a professional and amazing group. I am a mother of two children, and that is one of the reasons I do this work. I believe that we must work together to change this world for our Latina and Latino children, and all our children."
